FRANKIE DAY quickly became a popular disc jockey in the Greater Pittsburgh Oldies Community. Really, he’s retired business man Frank Dittig who, for over 40 years owned and operated D&D Office Plus. It was there in 2005 that he found himself in a conversation with the manager of the nearby radio station who had stopped by the store. The discussion led to Mr. Dittig’s high school career as disc jockey Frankie Day in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln Avenue District. One thing led to another and Frankie was invited to audition at the station. That relationship lasted nearly two decades before the station took a different approach with their format.
Now, the “Frankie Day Oldies Show” is heard 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday on Crown Sounds Radio.
Frankie appears regularly as a Master of Ceremonies, introduciing famous acts like Jimmy Beauont and the Skyliners, Pittsburgh’s own Pure Gold, The Marcels, Kenny Vance and the Planotones, the Duprees, Little Isadore, Terry Johnson’s Flamingos, Johnny Angel and the Halos, the Holidays, William Dell and WeeJams, the Vogues and many more at various venues including the Consol Energy Center, Heinz Hall, the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, Greensburg’s Palace Theater, Seven Springs, St. Barnabas’ Kean Theater, Waterfront Place in Morgantown, WV and McKeesport’s Renzie Park.
In January 2011, “770 KFB” – the station where Frankie was on the air at the time – finished second among eleven entries in a national poll of “Top AM Oldies Stations” conducted by veteran radio consultant Sean Ross in his newsletter “Ross On Radio”. Voting was conducted via the Internet with the winning station being a 5000-watt station from Morristown, NJ that can be heard in New York City.
In 2020, Frankie was nominated for the East Coast Music Hall of Fame under the category “Legend DJ/MC”.
Frankie and his late wife, Carolyn, were married for nearly 50 years. Together they had three grown children and eight grandchildren.
